Muslim inmates in Michigan observe Ramadan with support

Muslim inmates at the Genesee County Jail in Flint, Michigan, are observing Ramadan with support from the facility. Many have found faith while incarcerated, including Shahanna Thorns, who has been in jail for 10 months. Thorns is fasting from dawn to sunset for the first time this Ramadan, finding strength in the teachings from Islamic classes offered at the jail. Ramadan is a significant month for Muslims, involving fasting, prayer, and reflection. Inmates typically face challenges in practicing their faith due to limited access to religious resources. However, the Genesee County Jail makes specific accommodations, offering warm meals after sunset and before dawn, along with designated prayer space and religious services. This year, over 100 inmates are participating in Ramadan at the jail. Sheriff Chris Swanson emphasizes the importance of respecting people’s faith during incarceration, as it provides hope. The sheriff and other officials work to ensure that meals and prayer times meet Muslim inmates’ needs. Community members also engage with the inmates. Dr. Yaseen Hashish has volunteered for nearly 20 years to provide Islamic guidance, while Johnell Allen-Bey supports inmates by sharing his experiences and fostering hope. Religious freedom is crucial for many inmates, including Catina Youngblood, who observes Ramadan for dietary reasons despite being a Christian. While Genesee County Jail prioritizes religious accommodations, other facilities in the state do not always provide similar support. Councilman Leon El-Alamin, who served time in prison, recalls struggles for Muslim inmates in accessing appropriate meals and religious services. Now in a position of leadership, he appreciates the ability to practice Islam freely outside of jail. For many, Ramadan represents more than fasting; it is a time for spiritual growth and reflection. El-Alamin describes it as a chance for rejuvenation and reset, underscoring the significance of faith during difficult times.
