Muzaffarnagar exports GI-tagged jaggery to Bangladesh

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

A shipment of 30 tonnes of GI-tagged jaggery from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh has been sent to Bangladesh. This was announced by the commerce and industry ministry on Saturday. Muzaffarnagar is known for its high-quality sugarcane, making its jaggery popular in international markets. This export marks a new chapter for farmer producer organizations (FPOs) in western Uttar Pradesh, as they begin direct sales to Bangladesh. The Brijnandan Agro Farmer Producer Company, which has 545 members, is leading this export effort. The company was formed in 2023 and includes two women directors. With support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), this is the third successful export from an FPO in western UP. Previously, another FPO exported Basmati rice to Lebanon and Oman. The Brijnandan Agro FPC also received financial aid under UP's agri-export policy to help with its efforts. In another development, the first shipment of Anthurium flowers has been exported from Aizawl, Mizoram, to Singapore. This shipment included 1,024 cut flowers and was sent by IVC Agrovet. The flowers were sourced from a local growers’ cooperative. This milestone is expected to boost the region's economy and support local farmers, especially women involved in cultivation.
