In Kerala’s North Malabar region, a unique ritual dance called theyyam has been performed for centuries. Among the many theyyams, one stands out: Devakooth. Devakooth is special because it is the only theyyam performed by a woman. M.V. Ambujakshi is the current performer of this important tradition at Koolom Chuzhali Bhagavathy Kshetram. This role is considered a hereditary privilege, passed down through the generations of the Malaya community. Devakoothu is performed during a kaliyattam, or festival, held near Cherukunnu in the Kannur district. The right to perform originally belonged to the Vadakankooran family, while Ambujakshi's ancestors took on the role of Narada Muni. Over time, the right to perform Devakoothu shifted to her family. Ambujakshi’s predecessor, K.P. Lakshmi Amma, held this role before her. Since 2012, Ambujakshi has been dedicated to continuing this rare and meaningful tradition, viewing it as both a responsibility and a blessing.
