MVA boycotts Maharashtra legislative council over rulings
The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) boycotted the legislative council after a confidence motion was passed for deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe. Tensions arose over Gorhe’s earlier remarks about Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena (UBT). The MVA accused the council of ignoring procedures and moved a no-confidence motion against council chair Ram Shinde, claiming he was biased. During the council meeting, the MVA members protested against the motion, causing the session to be adjourned twice. They planned to wear black ribbons on Thursday to symbolize their discontent. If Gorhe presides over the House, they will boycott the proceedings. Earlier, Shinde dismissed a no-trust motion against Gorhe, stating the MVA did not provide adequate reasons. Despite objections from MVA members, the confidence motion was approved. Many MVA leaders expressed frustration, claiming their rights were disregarded and democratic practices were compromised. Following a meeting, MVA legislators decided to formally challenge Shinde's position, accusing him of running the House unfairly. They emphasized that they feel the council is not operating according to its rules. Currently, the ruling Mahayuti alliance holds a majority in the council, making it unlikely the no-confidence motion will succeed. MVA leaders confirmed they would continue their protests and challenge the council's operations in the coming days.
