My Wish finishes second in Hong Kong Derby
Mark Newnham, an Australian trainer, expressed disappointment after his horse, My Wish, finished just a short head behind in the BMW Hong Kong Derby on Sunday at Sha Tin. Jockey Luke Ferraris rode My Wish, who started from the difficult outside gate of 14, and they planned to hold back and conserve energy for a strong finish. The race was slow-paced for much of its length, but My Wish surged in the final stretch. Despite a strong sprint, he could not catch the winner, Cap Ferrat. Newnham praised My Wish's efforts, saying he was the best four-year-old in the series and expressed hope for his future. My Wish is set to compete in the Group One Champions Mile next month, although Newnham is uncertain of his next steps. He believes there is still room for improvement in My Wish and remains optimistic about his potential next year. In addition to Newnham's near miss, jockey Joao Moreira had a successful day at Sha Tin, winning two races. He was aiming for a Derby win with Packing Angel but finished in third place. Moreira also rode Packing Hermod, who equaled the track record for 1,400 meters with an impressive time of 1:19.92. Other prominent jockeys like Craig Williams and Ryan Moore also scored wins on the day, with several trainers celebrating successes across the card. The races featured a mix of experienced and new talent in both horses and jockeys, making for an exciting event.
