NASA discovers new force affecting Earth's atmospheric escape

NASA's Endurance mission has identified a previously unknown ambipolar electric field that contributes to the polar wind, a flow of atmospheric ions escaping into space. This phenomenon, observed for decades by satellites, shows that the amount of escaping air exceeds expectations from solar heating alone. The ambipolar field is now recognized as a fundamental force, comparable to gravity and the magnetic field.
