NASA evaluates two designs for next space telescope set to launch by 2032
NASA is evaluating two designs for its next space telescope, which is set to launch by 2032. The contenders are PRIMA, focused on far-infrared astronomy, and AXIS, aimed at studying black holes in distant galaxies. PRIMA will observe light at wavelengths between 24 and 261 microns, significantly expanding on capabilities of previous missions. It requires cryogenic cooling to operate effectively, using advanced sensors to achieve high sensitivity. AXIS will complement the James Webb Space Telescope by investigating black holes and transient cosmic events. Both teams have until 2026 to finalize their designs, each receiving $5 million for development.
