NASA identifies software glitch as cause of Ingenuity helicopter crash on Mars
NASA has identified a software glitch as the cause of the Ingenuity helicopter's crash on Mars during its final flight in January 2024. This incident followed 72 successful flights, far exceeding its original goal of five. Despite the crash, Ingenuity's achievements have led to the development of a new helicopter concept called the Mars Chopper. This larger, six-rotor vehicle will be capable of carrying payloads and exploring more challenging terrains on Mars. The Mars Chopper is still in the design phase, with NASA planning to incorporate lessons learned from Ingenuity's performance. The new helicopter aims to enhance Martian exploration by accessing areas that rovers cannot reach.
