NASA sets record for deep space communication with laser signal from 290 million miles
NASA has successfully sent a laser signal from a distance of 290 million miles, setting a new record for deep space communication. This achievement comes from the Deep Space Optical Communications technology, which aims to use lasers for faster data transmission. The signal was sent to the Psyche spacecraft, launched in October 2023, which is studying an asteroid. This test demonstrates that laser communication can transmit data at rates up to 100 times faster than current radio methods, although it requires greater precision. Previously, NASA had completed a similar transmission from 10 million miles away. The latest milestone shows significant progress in optical communications, which could enhance future missions to Mars and beyond.
