NATO launches Innovation Fund to boost European defense technology
NATO has launched the Innovation Fund to enhance its technological capabilities amid concerns over U.S. support under President-elect Donald Trump. The fund aims to invest in European companies developing advanced technologies, including semiconductor manufacturing in space. The fund has already made six investments, including in Space Forge, which plans to produce semiconductors in space. Other investments focus on robotics and lighter materials for military applications. This marks NATO's first venture into high-risk, venture capital funding. The NIF seeks to strengthen European defense innovation independently of U.S. contributions, as many NATO members push for increased military spending. The initiative reflects a shift in Europe’s approach to defense and technology in response to geopolitical challenges.
