Navy prioritizes fuel tank removal from sunken Manawanui off Samoa
The New Zealand Defence Force is prioritizing the removal of fuel tanks from the sunken navy ship Manawanui, which sank off Upolu, Samoa. About 200,000 liters of fuel have leaked, but it is not from the main tanks. Navy officials report that the leaking fuel is likely from pipes, and the situation is being monitored closely. They state that the quantity of oil is small and is dissipating naturally in the ocean. Around 60 Defence Force staff are conducting daily dives and shoreline patrols to assess environmental impacts. The navy is committed to working with the Samoan government on the recovery process, which will take time.
