NCAA President urges banning prop bets on college games

NCAA President Charlie Baker spoke out against prop betting on college sports just before the start of the NCAA Tournament. He highlighted the negative impact that these bets have on college athletes. Baker expressed his concerns during an interview with CBS Evening News. Baker noted that prop bets make fans more aggressive towards players. These bets are based on specific stats for individual players. He mentioned that during games, fans often shout at student-athletes, pressuring them about their performances. “You need to do better. I’m losing money on you,” is a common phrase, according to Baker. To address this issue, the NCAA is asking state gaming authorities to ban prop bets on college athletics. As of now, 38 states and D.C. have legalized sports betting, with 19 allowing prop bets on college players. Baker called the situation “bad” and stressed the need for change. In an effort to reduce harassment, the NCAA launched a public service announcement (PSA) campaign. This campaign reminds sports bettors to avoid harassing athletes after losing bets. The PSA urges fans to enjoy the game without attacking players. Congress is also taking action. Rep. Paul Tonko and Sen. Richard Blumenthal have reintroduced the SAFE BET Act, which aims to ban prop betting and live betting for college players. Tonko stated that the bill reflects a lack of understanding of gambling-related issues. The American Gaming Association estimates $3.1 billion in bets will be placed during March Madness. A recent NCAA study found that one in three top college athletes has faced harassment linked to sports betting.
