NDA corporators plan no-confidence motion in Greater Visakhapatnam
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is preparing for a potential political battle. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is planning to introduce a no-confidence motion against the current Mayor, G. Hari Venkata Kumari, of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). Her term ends on Tuesday. NDA leaders are strategizing to take control of the mayor’s position, needing 64 votes to succeed. Currently, they have 52 votes from their corporators, which include those from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Jana Sena Party (JSP). They also count on 12 ex-officio members. To gain the necessary votes, they seek support from around 12 YSRCP members. Reports indicate that several YSRCP corporators are considering switching parties due to positive views on the NDA government's local projects. A senior member from TDP suggests that six to eight YSRCP members are likely to join their ranks, with others eyeing JSP. If the NDA gains enough support, they can submit a no-confidence motion to the District Collector, who will set a date for the motion. However, the election of a new mayor will take time, as it requires a notification from the State government and scheduling by the Election Commission of India. TDP Floor Leader Peela Srinivasa Rao is being considered as the NDA's candidate for mayor, although they may adjust their choice based on community representations. Meanwhile, YSRCP corporators are meeting to plan their response to the expected no-confidence motion.
