NDP candidate wins Transcona byelection decisively
Elections Manitoba has announced the official results of the byelection in Winnipeg's Transcona riding. The election took place recently after the death of NDP MLA Nello Altomare earlier this year. Shannon Corbett from the NDP has won the election, becoming the new Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the area. Transcona is a stronghold for the NDP, with only one MLA from another party elected in over 30 years. Corbett received 3,616 votes. Her nearest rival, Progressive Conservative candidate Shawn Nason, received 1,569 votes. Liberal candidate Brad Boudreau and Independent candidate Susan Auch got 217 and 208 votes, respectively. A total of 5,630 votes were cast out of 17,962 registered voters, making the turnout approximately 31 percent. Four ballots were rejected, and 16 voters declined to cast their votes. Candidates have until March 27 to request a recount if they wish.
