Nebraska voters approve law banning abortions after first trimester
Nebraska voters are projected to approve a law banning abortions after the first trimester. This aligns with legislation passed by the Republican legislature and signed by the governor, which includes exceptions for medical emergencies, rape, and incest. The new law may conflict with another ballot initiative, Initiative 439, which seeks to allow abortions until fetal viability, around 24 weeks. Votes are still being counted for this initiative. Currently, Nebraska's law prohibits abortions after 12 weeks, a measure that took effect in June 2023. This law also includes exceptions for the mother's life or health, as well as for rape and incest.
