Nell Smith's posthumous single "Billions of People" releasing
Nell Smith has released a new single called "Billions of People," which is part of her upcoming posthumous album titled Anxious. The album is scheduled to be released on April 11. Smith, who passed away in October 2024 at just 17 years old, began this song with the Canadian band Shred Kelly during a songwriting session in September 2022. While working on the song, Nell shared a personal moment that inspired the lyrics. She received a message from someone special who was leaving town. This prompted her to bike down to a bridge to say goodbye. The emotions from that moment helped shape the verses of "Billions of People." Shred Kelly remarked that the rest of the song came together easily once they captured that inspiration. The release of the single is accompanied by a music video. The video includes footage of Smith recorded before her death. Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips expressed his sorrow over her passing, reflecting on how he still expects to receive messages from her. The label Bella Union is set to release Anxious in memory of Smith. The announcement on her official Instagram noted the sadness that she won’t witness how much her music is appreciated. It mentioned her struggle with imposter syndrome and recognized the talent that she had, which she may not have fully valued. Smith's music will serve as a lasting reminder of her impact.
