Netflix series highlights Corby mothers' fight for justice over toxic waste scandal
Netflix's new show "Toxic Town," premiering on February 27, tells the true story of mothers in Corby who sued their local council. Their children were born with limb defects linked to toxic waste cleanup efforts from the town's former steelworks. The cleanup, conducted from the late 1980s to mid-1990s, involved transporting toxic sludge without proper safety measures. This led to widespread pollution, resulting in 19 babies born with limb differences, significantly higher than the national average. In 2009, the mothers won their legal case against the council for negligence and public nuisance, receiving £14.6 million in compensation. The council continues to deny responsibility, and no criminal charges have been filed against any officials.
