Netflix's Sarandos supports Karla Sofía Gascón post-controversy
Karla Sofía Gascón, the Spanish actress, is still welcome at Netflix despite her recent controversy. Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, expressed his support for her in an interview with Variety. He stated, "You have to have grace when people make mistakes," emphasizing the importance of forgiveness. The controversy arose when old bigoted tweets from Gascón resurfaced just as her film, “Emilia Pérez,” was campaigning for an Oscar. This backlash negatively impacted the film's chances for the Best Picture award. After apologizing for her past comments, Gascón stepped back from publicity, making a teary appearance on CNN en Español to address the situation. Despite the challenges, she attended the Oscars. Her co-star, Zoe Saldaña, won Best Actress, but “Emilia Pérez” did not win Best Picture. Sarandos noted that while the film was a frontrunner, it was not guaranteed to win. Questions arose about Netflix's vetting process for talent’s social media histories before launching campaigns. Sarandos mentioned that they typically focus on major headlines from social media but admitted he does not personally check platforms like Twitter. “Emilia Pérez” can currently be streamed on Netflix.
