Network Rail cancels footbridge plan in Wareham, Dorset
Network Rail has backed down on plans to build a modern footbridge over a historic station in Wareham, Dorset. This decision comes after a long campaign led by actor Edward Fox, who has fought against the bridge proposal since it was first announced in 2017. The proposed bridge would have replaced the existing ground-level crossing, which has been used safely for over 40 years. Many residents felt the new bridge would be unsafe and isolating, especially for those with disabilities or parents with children. Fox delivered a passionate speech last month at a protest, urging local leaders to listen to the community's concerns. Thanks to the efforts of Fox and other activists, Dorset Council decided not to cooperate with Network Rail on the new plans. They emphasized the community’s strong opposition and recognized the importance of the existing crossing for daily life in Wareham. Fox welcomed the announcement, calling it "wonderful news" for the town. He expressed relief that the crossing would remain open for all residents, including those who rely on it to access services and schools. In a joint statement, Network Rail, Dorset Council, and local MP Vikki Slade confirmed that the current level crossing will continue to be staffed and operational. Network Rail acknowledged the crossing's significance and agreed to maintain safety measures. The council will also cover the annual staffing costs to ensure the crossing remains safe and accessible.
