New 738-bed student housing development planned at UConn
A large new student housing complex is set to start construction later this year near the University of Connecticut (UConn) campus in Storrs. The development, named The Mark Mansfield, will have 738 beds and is located at 134 North Eagleville Road. Landmark Properties, the company behind the project, hopes to ease the demand for student housing. Chase Powell, a senior director at Landmark Properties, emphasized the project's great location. It will be just a short walk from UConn's academic and athletic facilities. This will be Landmark's second project near UConn. The first, called The Standard at Four Corners, includes 890 beds and is expected to be ready by August for the fall 2025 semester. UConn has seen an increase in student enrollment and is working to provide more housing options. The number of undergraduate students has risen steadily, with 19,147 enrolled in 2023 and 19,835 in 2024. UConn is also increasing the number of off-campus beds available at nearby apartments, which should help meet this growing demand. UConn guarantees housing for first-year students and for those transferring from other campuses if they meet certain deadlines. While lots of students can apply for on-campus housing, not everyone will get a spot, especially as they move into their sophomore, junior, or senior years. Powell noted that current housing options are often older and in need of updates. The Mark Mansfield will feature modern amenities such as a pool, hot tubs, fitness centers, and study rooms designed for student life. The project will include three-, four-, and five-bedroom units to accommodate students looking to live with peers. Construction on The Mark Mansfield is expected to start in summer 2025 and finish by summer 2028. The development will also bring back Huskies Tavern, a popular restaurant, in a retail space on the ground floor. Mansfield's town manager, Ryan Aylesworth, expressed support for the project, highlighting the need for more housing in the area. The new development will help address the growing need for student and potentially non-student housing in Storrs.
