New AI cameras in Essex detect seatbelt violations

New AI-powered speed cameras are being tested by police in Essex. These cameras can catch drivers who are not wearing seatbelts or using mobile phones. This technology, introduced in 2021, has been tested in various parts of England. Experts warn that these cameras can detect more than traditional speed cameras. They aim to reduce distractions while driving. A car finance expert from Bumper highlighted that the cameras use multiple views of the driver and passengers. AI analyzes this footage to identify safety violations. However, any violations must be reviewed by police before issuing fines. Drivers need to be aware of potential penalties. For instance, using a mobile phone while driving can lead to a £200 fine and six penalty points. This could increase to £1,000 in court or even £2,500 for bus and lorry drivers. Not wearing a seatbelt results in a £100 fine, which can rise to £500 if prosecuted. Initial trials show promising results. In just a few weeks, the cameras caught 590 drivers without seatbelts and 40 using their phones. The program has expanded to ten police forces across England, including areas like Durham and Greater Manchester. Experts believe that enforcing these rules may lead to fewer accidents and safer roads for everyone.
