New Covid variant XEC spreads in UK with common cold-like symptoms
A new Covid variant, XEC, is spreading in the UK and worldwide. This variant, a combination of two previous strains, is more transmissible than earlier versions and shares symptoms similar to a common cold or flu. Symptoms of XEC include shortness of breath, high fever, persistent cough, and fatigue. Most people recover within three weeks, but serious illness can occur, especially in vulnerable individuals. Vaccines remain the best defense against severe illness. Free vaccines will be available from October 3 for at-risk groups, while others can purchase them privately. Testing options include lateral flow tests available for purchase or free for eligible individuals.
