New €450 payment for unemployed in Ireland starting March 31
A new payment scheme in Ireland will soon provide financial support to thousands of people. Starting March 31, 2025, individuals who become fully unemployed may receive up to €450 under the Pay-Related Benefit system. This scheme is a reform to the existing Jobseeker's Benefit. It offers enhanced payments based on a person's work history and PRSI contributions. The aim is to create a safety net for those with a long work history who may suddenly find themselves without a job. Former Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys, announced the changes last year. She emphasized that the reform will help workers avoid a sharp drop in income during tough times. The government has allocated €160 million for this new initiative in 2025. Eligibility for the payment depends on individual PRSI contributions. For those with five years of contributions, the payment will start at 60% of their previous earnings, up to a maximum of €450. This rate will decrease over the following months. Those with 2 to 5 years of contributions will receive 50% of their earnings, capped at €300 per week. To qualify, applicants must meet several criteria, including paying a minimum number of PRSI contributions before losing their job. Additionally, there are specific rules about what constitutes disqualification from receiving the benefits. Overall, the new Pay-Related Benefit offers a more flexible and supportive system for unemployed individuals in Ireland. Those affected by the changes should familiarize themselves with the new rules and prepare to apply once the scheme starts.
