New Hampshire delegation discusses AUKUS submarine agreement

The New Hampshire congressional delegation gathered in Portsmouth on Tuesday to discuss the AUKUS submarine agreement. This agreement includes Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It was formed in 2021 and aims to provide nuclear submarines and technology to Australia. This partnership is seen as a way to counter China's growing influence in the Pacific. U.S. Rep. Maggie Goodlander explained the significance of AUKUS, calling it a powerful alliance with an important mission. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen emphasized that strong alliances and a solid submarine base give the U.S. an edge over Chinese forces. The Navy League of the United States noted the importance of the delegation's focus on this issue. Kevin Galeaz from the League said having the full delegation present is vital for the Pacific's future. He pointed out that China's navy is actively operating around Australia. The submarine agreement is expected to bring increased activity to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and boost business for local defense contractors. Rep. Chris Pappas remarked that the submarine industry is crucial for national security. Although former President Donald Trump has shifted away from some Biden policies, he has expressed support for the submarine deal. The delegation hopes this backing will continue. Goodlander concluded that the agreement will enhance safety, strength, and prosperity in America, benefiting everyone involved.
