Two students from New Hampshire are currently in Poland to help Ukrainian children who have lost parents due to the ongoing war. Juniors Sofie Ramasko and Kelly McVeigh, from the Holderness School in Plymouth, are volunteering with a nonprofit organization called Common Man for Ukraine. They are participating in a four-week trauma retreat aimed at helping these children heal. Ramasko and McVeigh are now in the third week of the program. Both students say that the experience has been very rewarding. Ramasko expressed joy in working with the children, noting their big smiles every day. “These are just kids, but they've gone through so much,” she said. McVeigh added that while they strive to keep the atmosphere fun, moments of the children's hardships occasionally surface. This reminds them of the importance of their work. McVeigh, who had previously participated in a retreat with Common Man for Ukraine last August, mentioned the close bonds that form among the kids in a short time. The program provides a supportive environment for the children, helping them build connections through shared experiences.
