New Jersey reports surge in wildfires as drought conditions persist
New Jersey is experiencing an unusually high number of wildfires, with over 300 reported in the past two weeks, more than eight times the amount from the same period last year. The state is facing severe drought conditions and record-low rainfall. Fire officials have declared an "extreme" fire risk statewide, with ongoing wildfires in Gloucester, Ocean, and Burlington counties. Evacuations occurred in Evesham Township as firefighters continue to battle the blazes. The U.S. Drought Monitor has classified much of South Jersey's drought status as "extreme." Philadelphia has not seen rain for 40 days, breaking a 149-year-old record for consecutive dry days.
