New Mangalore Port seeks approval to resume harbour construction

thehindu.com

The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) is asking the Karnataka Fisheries Department to restart work on the Kulai Fishing Harbour. Construction was stopped on October 16, 2024, due to objections from local fishermen. NMPA is carrying out this project under the Sagarmala scheme, which helps improve coastal infrastructure. The project is expected to cost ₹147 crore, with funding shared by the Union Shipping Ministry and local authorities. Fishermen raised concerns that the harbour would not benefit them. The contractor involved in the project also expressed worries about the design and construction. However, a technical committee found that the layout of the breakwaters matches the original plans. Further studies from the Central Water and Power Research Station confirmed that the current design will provide safe conditions for boats, even during bad weather. Other expert assessments also found that the fishermen's and contractor's concerns were not valid. NMPA expressed disappointment that their efforts to improve facilities for fishermen were delayed by unfounded claims. They have formally requested permission to continue the construction work.
