New moon brings annular solar eclipse today across parts of South America and Pacific
Today, October 2, 2024, a new moon will create an annular solar eclipse, visible in parts of the southeastern Pacific and southern South America. The eclipse will start at 2:49 p.m. EDT (1849 GMT). The annular eclipse will be fully visible from Easter Island, with the maximum ring effect occurring at 2:07 p.m. local time. In Chile and Argentina, the eclipse will be visible later in the afternoon. Observers in Hawaii and American Samoa will see a partial eclipse. In Hawaii, about 53% of the sun will be covered, while in American Samoa, around 29% will be obscured.
