New opera portrays post-World War II middle class
The new opera "We Are the Lucky Ones" premiered at the Dutch National Opera, presenting a poignant view of the post-World War II middle class. It features eight singers sharing true stories based on interviews with people born between 1940 and 1949. The opera, composed by Philip Venables with a libretto by Ted Huffman and Nina Segal, explores themes of regret and reflection. It aims to capture the complexities of a generation, moving beyond simple narratives to offer a deeper understanding of their experiences. The performance begins with a ghost light on stage, symbolizing both safety and the supernatural. This element sets the tone for a work that blends storytelling with emotional depth, creating a unique theatrical experience.
