New underpass improves traffic on Panchkula-Shimla highway
A new underpass has opened on the Panchkula-Shimla highway, easing a major traffic jam. This underpass is near Amravati Enclave and will help around 50 villages in the area. It is expected to improve travel for locals and tourists on this busy route. Before the underpass, traffic was often heavy, especially during peak tourist season. The new structure allows for smoother and faster movement. Vijay Bansal, the state president of Shivalik Vikas Manch, said that travel time will be reduced and safety will be improved for residents and visitors alike. The underpass cost around Rs 17.95 crore to build. It was damaged during heavy rain in July 2023. Repairs took some time, causing traffic to be diverted through narrow roads, leading to more congestion and accidents as drivers tried to navigate detours. Heavy rainfall and the release of water from the Kaushalya Dam contributed to the damage in July. With the underpass now operational, it is expected that local tourism and economic activities will see a boost, making travel more enjoyable for everyone.
