New volcanic eruption occurs on Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula
A new volcanic eruption began on Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula late on November 20. Drone footage captured lava erupting from a 3-kilometer fissure located northeast of Grindavik, marking the seventh eruption in the area since December 2023. The eruption surprised observers, as it was not expected in November. Fortunately, it is occurring away from Grindavik and critical infrastructure. By early Thursday, the Icelandic Meteorological Office reported that the eruption had peaked, with no lava flowing toward the town. In response to the eruption, Grindavik was evacuated, and a state of emergency was declared by local authorities.
