New York Jets sign key players for roster improvement
The New York Jets are making changes to their roster after a challenging couple of seasons. They have 27 free agents to manage as they try to improve their chances of winning and break a 14-year stretch without a playoff appearance. The first wave of NFL free agency started on March 10. While the Jets did not make huge moves, they made several signings that team officials believe will enhance their squad. With over $27 million in salary cap space, the Jets are likely to stay low-key until the NFL Draft on April 24-26. One of their key signings is linebacker Jamie Sherwood, who re-signed for three years at $45 million, $30 million guaranteed. Sherwood is expected to take over as the defensive play-caller after the departure of captain C.J. Mosley. Last season, Sherwood led the team in tackles and showed his potential as a standout player. The Jets also signed quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million deal. Fields aims to be the starting quarterback after the Jets released Aaron Rodgers. Even with this signing, the team may still consider drafting another quarterback in the upcoming draft. At just 26 years old, Fields has the chance to become a franchise player after a difficult time in Chicago. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi joined the team, bringing experience from his seven seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. Nnadi is expected to provide depth on the defensive line and help strengthen their run defense. In the secondary, the Jets re-signed Isaiah Oliver to a one-year, $2.5 million contract. Oliver is known for his versatility, having played various positions in defense. They also signed cornerback Brandon Stephens, who is looking to improve after a tough season. For the offensive line, Chukwuma Okorafor is brought in for depth after Morgan Moses signed with another team. The Jets signed center Josh Myers for a good deal to add experience as a backup. Lastly, the Jets hope that wide receiver Tyler Johnson can help their receiving corps. Johnson has had a decent career, but he may not fill all the gaps they have at wide receiver. Overall, the Jets are aiming to strengthen their team as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
