New York voters likely to approve constitutional amendment protecting abortion rights

wcpo.com November 6, 2024, 08:01 PM UTC

New York voters are expected to approve a measure that will protect abortion rights through an equal rights amendment to the state constitution. This amendment guarantees equal rights regardless of sex, including aspects related to reproductive healthcare.

The proposal, known as Proposal 1, was initially removed from the ballot in May 2024 due to a procedural error. However, the state Supreme Court reinstated it in June.

Currently, abortion is allowed in New York until fetal viability, typically around 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy.
