New Zealand Covid-19 inquiry receives 3,200 submissions
The latest inquiry into New Zealand's Covid-19 response has received about 3,200 submissions from the public. The inquiry is led by veteran lawyer Grant Illingworth KC. He is seeking more input, especially from young people, disabled individuals, and those impacted by vaccine mandates and extended lockdowns. The inquiry is the second phase of a Royal Commission, focusing on government decisions made in 2021 and 2022 regarding vaccines and lockdowns. It was initiated as part of coalition agreements between the National Party, Act, and New Zealand First, aiming for a broader investigation than the first inquiry. Hearings for this phase are expected to take place in July, with a final report scheduled for release in February next year. The first phase, led by Professor Tony Blakely, examined early lockdown measures and concluded they were effective in preventing widespread infection.
