New Zealand prepares for 2026 Commonwealth Games with reduced sports program
New Zealand will still compete strongly at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, despite a reduced program featuring only ten sports. Key sports like rugby sevens, hockey, and squash have been removed, while athletics, swimming, and boxing remain. Glasgow will host events including athletics, swimming, and artistic gymnastics. New Zealand has excelled in these areas, winning numerous medals in recent competitions. However, the absence of road cycling and mountain biking is notable, as these sports have historically brought success. In 2022, New Zealand won 50 medals, including 20 gold, at the Commonwealth Games. Without the removed sports, the total would have been 38 medals. The cutbacks aim to streamline the event for future editions.
