New Zealand seeks trade deal with India
India is actively working on trade agreements with several countries, including the UK and the EU. This push is driven by India's goal for export-led growth and worries about U.S. trade policies. On Tuesday, New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Luxon announced his country’s interest in finalizing a long-delayed trade deal with India. He met with Indian officials in New Delhi to discuss this. Bilateral trade between the two nations has seen a significant increase, growing by over 30% last year and reaching $1.2 billion in 2024. A free-trade agreement could enhance cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy. Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal believes that trade could increase tenfold between the countries in the next ten years. However, past negotiations faced challenges, particularly regarding India's dairy sector. India has been cautious about opening its markets in this area. Soumya Bhowmick, a researcher, noted that these protective measures are intended to safeguard local farmers from international competition.
