Newark Airport to begin construction on $3.5 billion AirTrain replacement in 2025
Newark Airport's aging monorail will be replaced with a new AirTrain system, with construction starting in 2025. The Port Authority approved a $3.5 billion budget for the project, which includes elevated tracks and three new stations. The new AirTrain will feature modern cable-drawn railcars, improving accessibility and passenger experience. The existing monorail, built in 1996, has faced ongoing repairs and limitations, carrying 33,000 passengers daily before the pandemic. The project faced delays and increased costs due to inflation and a pause in 2022. The new system is expected to be operational by 2030, enhancing connectivity to the airport's terminals.
