NGT demands reports on Chennai's composting centre closures
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to explain its decision to close 168 micro composting centres and 88 material recovery facilities. The GCC shut these facilities due to public complaints about unpleasant odors. The NGT expressed concern over the reliance on incinerators for waste management, stating they contribute to pollution. The tribunal emphasized that closing composting centres does not support sustainable waste management practices. The GCC, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department must submit reports by March 27. These reports should detail the reasons for the closures and alternative waste management measures being implemented.
