NHAI starts flyover construction at Edappally Junction

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started work on new flyovers and underpasses at Edappally Junction. This project aims to reduce traffic congestion at the busy intersection of NH 66 and NH 544 in Kerala. Two flyovers, each 650 meters long, will be built on either side of Edappally Junction. They will sit above the Edappally-Palarivattom bypass and the Edappally-Varapuzha corridor. The space under these flyovers will create vehicle underpasses where cars can make U-turns. The construction will take place near Oberon Mall on the south side and in front of the LuLu Group office on the north side. Motorists will benefit from these underpasses as they will allow vehicles to cross the junction without waiting at traffic signals. However, drivers will need to travel about 2 kilometers more to use these underpasses. The VUPs (vehicle underpasses) will be wider than usual to accommodate the high volume of traffic at this location. The construction of the flyovers and underpasses is expected to be completed by March 2026, coinciding with the widening of the NH 66 stretch. As part of the traffic adjustments, vehicles turning from NH 544 to NH 66 will need to follow specific routes using the new underpasses. The NHAI's decision to build these VUPs, instead of a single underpass linking the bypass to NH 66, was made to minimize land acquisition needs. This project marks a significant step toward improving traffic flow at one of Kerala’s busiest junctions.
