NHA's deficit exceeds Rs318 billion, deepening financial crisis
The National Highway Authority (NHA) reported a net deficit of over Rs318 billion for the fiscal year 2024-25, a decrease from Rs413 billion the previous year. However, this deficit is nearly double that of FY22. NHA's total losses have surpassed Rs1.82 trillion, with outstanding loans reaching Rs3.1 trillion. Annual revenues remain low at Rs54.15 billion, while total assets have declined to Rs5.8 trillion from Rs5.9 trillion in FY22. The Ministry of Finance highlighted significant financial challenges, including rising debt and operational risks. NHA's debt is increasing by Rs300 billion annually, leading to a projected interest obligation exceeding Rs150 billion, which poses a credit risk to the government.
