Nick Miller joins European Commission as speechwriter
Nick Miller, a former adviser to Irish leader Leo Varadkar, has started a new job as a speechwriter for Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission. Miller began this role recently and will be working in Brussels, where the commission is based. Miller worked closely with Varadkar from 2011 to 2017, helping him during his time as a minister in various departments. He became the government press secretary when Varadkar was appointed taoiseach in 2017. After Varadkar resigned early last year, Miller left the government as well. A spokeswoman for the European Commission confirmed Miller's new position. The agency had been looking to expand its speechwriting team, specifically seeking a native English speaker for the role. Before joining the commission, Miller worked as a communications consultant and briefly collaborated with a public affairs firm in Dublin. Miller is now part of a team that drafts speeches for von der Leyen, separate from her main group of policy advisers. There have also been recent changes in von der Leyen's team, with some officials moving in and out of their roles.
