NIFT promotes northeastern traditional craftsmanship at bazaar
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Shillong launched a two-day craft bazaar on Tuesday. This event celebrates the rich cultural heritage of traditional crafts from the northeast region of India. Shankar Kumar Jha, the director of NIFT Shillong, stated that the institute is committed to preserving and promoting local craftsmanship. The craft bazaar gives artisans a chance to showcase their work, connect with designers and consumers, and explore market opportunities. Around 25 skilled artisans are participating this year. The bazaar features various craftworks that highlight the unique skills and cultures of the artisans. It aims to support local artists and small businesses while promoting sustainable 'Made-in-India' products. A release from NIFT emphasized the importance of honoring India’s cultural heritage through such events. N Munish Singh, the regional director of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), praised NIFT Shillong's initiatives for the craft sector. He encouraged artisans to focus on quality and innovation to meet market demands. Singh remarked on the inspiring cultural heritage of the northeast's traditional crafts. He encouraged artisans to use this platform to grow their businesses and reach broader markets. Singh also advised NIFT students to merge traditional techniques with modern fashion. He expressed interest in collaborating with NIFT to promote the region's crafts on an international level.
