Nigerian man arrested for extorting Cuttack doctor
A 31-year-old Nigerian man has been arrested in Delhi for extorting a woman doctor in Cuttack, India. The police say this extortion led the doctor to take her own life on March 1. The man, named Djedje Raymond, also known as Chijioke John Okoye, has allegedly been living in India without valid documents since 2020. Authorities arrested Raymond near Palam police station and found two passports in his possession. One is Nigerian and the other is from Ivory Coast. The police discovered the doctor’s body hanging in her home, along with a suicide note that described her ordeal. The investigation reveals that Raymond contacted the doctor through social media in January, pretending to be a doctor from Delhi. After they exchanged messages over time, she shared her WhatsApp number with him in February. During their video calls, he obtained private photographs of her and threatened to release them unless she paid him money. The doctor complied, transferring an unverified total amount of money. When Raymond demanded more, she felt desperate and ended her life. Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rishikesh Khilari reported that they found thousands of screenshots of fake social media profiles linked to the accused, along with evidence of other victims in Kenya and New Zealand. The police have collected evidence that shows Raymond ran an elaborate online scam targeting professionals in India and abroad. They used digital footprints, bank transactions, and phone locations to track him down. Authorities are now seeking police remand to continue their investigation into his activities and potential additional victims.
