No charges for ex-Ohio deputy's sexual encounter with inmate
A former Ohio sheriff’s deputy, April Woodside, will not face charges for having sex with an inmate, Jordan Schwertner. Woodside was fired in October 2022 for this incident and was also suspected of smuggling drugs into the jail. The case was initially closed in December 2022 but reopened in November 2024. Woodside admitted to having sex with Schwertner and sending him numerous explicit photos, but the prosecutor declined to pursue charges due to legal protections for public employees. The investigation revealed that Schwertner filed a federal complaint claiming he could not consent to the sexual encounter. The prosecutor stated that Woodside's admissions could not be used against her in court, but the case may be re-evaluated if new evidence emerges.
