Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, George Kurian, announced that no village from Dakshina Kannada has been chosen for development as a Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Village. This decision was confirmed during a response in the Lok Sabha to MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta. The minister explained that the Karnataka government prioritized fishermen villages already selected under the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) projects. As a result, Dakshina Kannada was not included in the program's list of 100 coastal villages identified for development. Currently, there are no plans to expand the program beyond these villages. The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) aims to promote economically vibrant fishermen communities along coastlines. Additionally, the government has set up two committees to oversee the implementation of this initiative. Villages are chosen after discussions with state governments and based on specific criteria.
