Non-binary passenger sues Ryanair over booking options
A non-binary passenger is suing Ryanair for £4,200. The passenger claims the airline's website did not provide a gender-neutral title during the booking process. This incident occurred when the customer was booking a return flight from Berlin to Gran Canaria in October 2021. They found that the website only offered traditional gender titles like "Mr" or "Mrs," leaving them with no appropriate option. After Ryanair declined to settle the matter outside of court, the case will now be heard by a Berlin state court. The passenger not only seeks compensation but also wants the airline to change its website to include gender-neutral titles. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had suggested airlines offer non-binary options back in 2019. Since then, several airlines, including United Airlines and British Airways, have started to provide such options. Ryanair's failure to include a title like "Mx" in its dropdown menu has added to the controversy. Other airlines have implemented gender-neutral greetings and policies to help all passengers feel included.
