North Andover schools to cut 40 jobs next year
Dozens of staff members in North Andover's school district will lose their jobs next year. The district announced budget cuts that will also include the temporary closure of Kittredge Elementary School. The North Andover Teachers Association shared concerns about the $68.2 million budget. They warned it could lead to the loss of 40 jobs and larger class sizes. Funding for athletics will be reduced by 10%. Superintendent Pamela Lathrop explained the situation in a message after the school committee approved the budget. This budget represents a 9.89% increase from last year but is $3.5 million less than what would be needed for current services. Lathrop noted that federal funding support from COVID-19 is ending, forcing the district to make tough choices. Job cuts will affect staff at all levels, from elementary to high school and the central office. The planned closure of Kittredge Elementary is aimed at maintaining financial stability. According to Lathrop, keeping the school open would require larger cuts across the district. Other reductions will impact summer IT support, individual school budgets, and curriculum funding. Lathrop stated that although the decisions are difficult, they are necessary for the future stability of the district while focusing on student learning. In response, teachers and staff are organizing a "Stop the Cuts!" rally on Saturday morning at North Andover Middle School from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This story is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information emerges.
