North Carolina government seeks to improve hiring process
North Carolina's state government is facing high vacancy rates, averaging 182 days to hire new employees. The Office of State Human Resources plans to modernize the hiring process by simplifying applications and increasing temporary-to-permanent hiring options. Director Staci Meyer highlighted the need for changes to the state Human Resources Act, which has not been updated since the late 1980s. New technology from Workday will be implemented in October to streamline hiring across agencies. Concerns were raised about the 33% vacancy rate in state health care jobs. Meyer acknowledged the need to reassess employee benefits and retention strategies, especially as many state workers are nearing retirement eligibility.
