Northern Japan faces record snowfall with areas buried under five meters of snow
Northern Japan is experiencing severe snowfall, with some areas buried under up to five meters (16 feet) of snow after two weeks of continuous storms. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for more heavy snow and strong winds. Cities like Sukayu in Aomori and Tsunan in Niigata have reported record snow levels, causing traffic disruptions and stranding hundreds of vehicles. At least 21 snow-related deaths have been reported across the region this winter. Authorities are investigating the deaths of three workers in Fukushima, who may have been exposed to toxic hydrogen sulfide gas while working in a snowy area. Snow accumulation may have trapped the gas near a hot spring.
