Norway warns Trump against Ukraine concessions
Norway's Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, stated that U.S. President Donald Trump should not make concessions for Ukraine in negotiations with Russia. He expressed concern that Trump's comments could help Russia at a time when it is already struggling economically and facing military losses due to the ongoing war. Eide made his remarks while attending the Raisina Dialogue conference in Delhi, where discussions focused on the U.S. role in negotiating a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. As talks are set to resume in Riyadh, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of direct talks between Moscow and Kiev. Eide criticized Trump's suggestions, which include recognizing Crimea as Russian territory and urging Ukraine to abandon its NATO ambitions, saying they could undermine Ukraine's position. He stressed that a ceasefire should be led by the Ukrainians and Russians involved in the conflict. Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, reiterated the country's red lines during the conference, stating that they will not cede any territory to Russia or agree to limits on their military power. Sybiha believes now is the time for diplomacy to achieve lasting peace and hopes Trump will support this effort. However, a Russian parliament member remarked that talks cannot occur with Ukraine's current government, which they consider illegitimate. The situation remains complex, with both sides having differing views on future negotiations. Jaishankar noted that India has maintained a neutral stance on the conflict and has advised both parties to engage directly. Eide underscored the need to recognize Russia as the aggressor in this conflict, and he discussed enhancing bilateral relations with India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his visit.
